The world’s first animated sex bomb strikes a classic Marilyn Monroe pose. Though we think that Ms Monroe may have stolen it from Betty… As the girl herself says, “you can feed me bread and water, or a great big bale of hay ... But don't take my boop-oop-a-doop away!”

Who would have thought that Betty started out as a dog, but indeed she did – though the first lady of cartoons had morphed her floppy ears into earrings by the time she had hearts racing in 1932.

Another trivia fact for you – fading star Helen Kane tried to sue the makers of the animated shorts for stealing her identity and catchphrase. Although Betty was inspired by the actress, the court ruled there was no case (after watchinga couple of cartoons and Ms Kane’s films, surely an enjoyable day in court) especially when footage of a singer called Baby Esther was found uttering ‘boop-oop-a-doop” many years before Boop’s debut.

Betty's voice was provided by five ladies - Margie Hines, Kate Wright, Bonnie Poe, Mae Questel and Annabel Little – the latter even taking a Betty Boop stage show on the road. Mae Questel won a Helen Kane lookalike contest and made appearances in RKO cinemas as a look-a-like, before becoming the definitive voice of Betty Boop until the series ended in ’39. Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway did some voices too!

Boop-a-billia has been in stores since 1934 and this cardboard cut out is a fine example of the new cool status of Betty Boop, with late night showings in student venues and her part in 60s and 70s psychadelia helping to make her a cult icon.

She's the most pulse racing cartoon character until Jessica Rabbit lit up our screens (and even then Betty appeared in cameo).

Perfect for anyone who fell in love with Wilma Flintsone and gets excited by the Cadburys Bunny.
